The Best Hurricane Cocktail Recipe: A Refreshing Rum Classic
I had initially intended to post this around the time I wrote my blog post from Tales of the Cocktail this year, but seeing as Hurricane Helene is bearing down on us it felt like an appropriate time to post a recipe for a Hurricane Cocktail.
The Hurricane cocktail was created in the 1940s by Pat O’Brien in New Orleans as a way to use up excess rum due to wartime restrictions on other spirits. Combining rum with passion fruit and lime juices, the drink became an instant hit, especially during Mardi Gras. It’s named after the distinctive hurricane lamp-shaped glass it’s traditionally served in. Today, the Hurricane remains a symbol of New Orleans’ vibrant cocktail culture, known for its bold flavors and tropical appeal.
